UAE Resume Guide: Why Nationality and Visa Status Matter

The UAE Is Unique
With over 80% of the population being expats, the UAE job market has unique requirements. Unlike Western countries where nationality and visa status are considered discriminatory to ask, the UAE openly requires this information. It's not discrimination — it's practicality. Employers need to know your visa sponsorship needs.
Nationality: Required
Your nationality must be clearly stated on your UAE resume. This is because different nationalities have different visa processing requirements, costs, and timelines. It's a standard field and omitting it will raise red flags with recruiters who may assume you're trying to hide something.
Visa Status: Critical
State your current visa status clearly: UAE Resident Visa, Visit Visa, or 'Require Sponsorship.' If you're already in the UAE with a valid visa, you're significantly more attractive to employers as they can hire you faster and cheaper. If you need sponsorship, be upfront — many companies sponsor, but they need to plan for it.
Photo and Personal Details
A professional photo is expected. Date of birth is commonly included. Some employers ask for marital status and number of dependents (relevant for housing allowances). While these requirements differ from Western norms, they're standard in Gulf countries and shouldn't be omitted.
Dubai vs Abu Dhabi vs Other Emirates
Dubai and Abu Dhabi have the most competitive job markets. Dubai skews toward finance, tech, and tourism. Abu Dhabi focuses on oil/gas, government, and defense. The free zones (DIFC, ADGM, JAFZA) have their own visa rules. Research which emirate and zone your target company operates in.
Salary Expectations
Unlike most countries, it's common (and sometimes expected) to include salary expectations on UAE applications. Research market rates on Bayt.com or GulfTalent. Remember: UAE salaries are typically tax-free but may include housing, transportation, and education allowances as part of the package.
